San Chinarro Market

Location: Madrid, Spain
Client: Local Government
Date: 2008
Site Area: 8,500 m2

The planning of the market intends to insert a focus of civic life into the tissue of a new neighborhood. The site is located between a school and a park. In this urban situation, we don¡¯t want that the building is a barrier for the flow of children or other visitors using to the park, so we decide to hide the program of the market underground, and organize it around an open patio. This courtyard acts as intermediate space that modulates the transition from interior to exterior in different heights. Understood as landscape, the sloped roofs are covered with vegetation. The only evidence of the building to the park is the patio, whose perimeter corridor links the spaces horizontally, and a series of skylights, which distribute the building vertically.
